This can apply to any area of business, when I was running my own I got various jobs in areas where I felt I sucked, so I got a job in telesales to better my phone manner, and at one point even did door to door because I thought it would help me at conference.

Point being I did a string of pointless jobs for various weeks to get a better understanding or certain skills that I needed. But, then I went home and worked another 8 hours doing my actual job, well ok it was more like 4-6 but the point, but you still NEED to do your actual job.

And to be fair "Busy? Doing what? Most likely: selling and recommending strategies for link building" That is kind of vitally important, business that don't sell...... go bust.....

This brings me to problem number two people should do a stint in link building if they can. But, not everyone is suited to being a jack of all trades. Some people will just suck at link building end of, some people just don't get it. For example a copywriter doesn't have to be a link builder and if they suck at it why does it matter if they write good engaging copy but can't identify a good site for toffee I don't care.

The thing is link building is usually a junior role in most companies and what you do when you 1st get into SEO, you should have done it at some point. The issue is when people haven't done it in years and still think it's as easy as it was when you could just go to a broker and have him do all the work or place 100 crappy sidebar links on 50 PR2 sites using teliad and rank.

I guess I sort of agree and sort of don't. I think managerial level staff should understand the people they manage, but I do think some agencies will be running at capacity and people really wont have time to do this without giving up their own time which you can't expect of people when they have no real vested interest in a companies development.

Megan,

Fantastic! I've been saying this for years and definitely think some of my best employees and peers have link building in their backgrounds ;)

I'm going to at least make this required reading in my SEO 101 classes. Put it up as a challenge to all that "if you think you're hot in the organic game, show me a link you built."

Anyway, hope you're well,

Phil

p.s. I've moved into the Sledge home...
