According to Google’s patent on co-occurrence [http://www.google.com/patents/US5675819], it seems pretty simple actually. There are certain words that should naturally appear around a key search term, i.e., “co-occur,” and Google wants to see those words as well to make sure the content isn’t spam. It fits right in with Google saying “content is king.”

I think this post is good for the mainstream of thought on search. It really isn’t challenging any sacred cows. It still holds a Google-centric view of search.

Search is not a mathematical problem. It is an epistemological issue.

Wow fantastic post Josh! I really enjoy hearing people dive into the details of perceived changes to the algorithm that focus on semantic analysis and topical pagerank. Now if they could just figure out how to correctly add social to that mix, we’d be looking at an industry paradigm shift. Cool stuff..
